How to download: Add a new Flow in gridmo and select this template from the list.
This template is based on draft release version 07RC
(released 10 July 2024) available here. We will update this template if any changes are made to PP5-6 Appendix C-2 prior to its formal adoption.
Before running this template, complete the following:
- Complete the Model setup template, including setting and testing all standard global variables for the PSS®E and PSCAD™ models of your generating system.
- If your project is a battery (BESS), set up scenario variables for both discharging and charging mode.
- Add this template to your project.
Changes required before first run
- Loop Start Node
1318
- set thel_qcmd
loop variable to your maximum and minimum reactive power limits (in per unit on rated active power base). - If your generator is actually a HVDC link, or has a HVDC interconnector as part of a hybrid project, enable Test 7e in Loop Start Node
1374
.
Changes recommended prior to submission
- None
Background
The following sections detail the assumptions and notes that have been made in the development of this template.
It is important to review the below assumptions and notes to ensure that the template is suitable for your project.
Several times in Appendix C-2 the 'dynamic performance between PSSE and PSCAD must align to the fullest extent possible, particularly for active and reactive power at the POM.'
This is ambiguous and subjective, hence manual review of the results of this template is required to confirm acceptable benchmarking/alignment.
Several times in Appendix C-2 there is a requirement for the generating system to not cause any DSTATE errors in PSS®E (also known as Initial conditions suspect
). This can be easily checked by reviewing the gridmo Simulation Summary file, as the gridmo Engine will raise a warning if suspect initial conditions are detected.
Note the below headings are only included by exception (e.g. if there is a missing heading below which is in Appendix C-2, then there are no section-specific assumptions or notes).
Test 4 (4.4) - Voltage Reference Step Change
Note that damping ratio for the reactive power step is not yet automatically calculated. Manual post-processing of the output from Plot Node 1348
is required to identify if the damping ratio is acceptable. However, if there is little or no overshoot in the reactive power step, the damping ratio is 1.0
or greater which meets the specified criteria.
Test 8 (4.8) - Balanced Remote Fault Ride-Through
The specified acceptance criteria is highly subjective ('necessary support', 'as fast as possible while remaining stable and damped' and 'shall not exacerbate transitent overvoltage conditions'). Manual review of the results of this test is required to confirm acceptable behaviour.
Test 12 (4.12) - Frequency Ride-Through
Frequency ride-through tests for under-frequency ride-through as per NERC PRC-006-NPCC
are not currently included in this template, only frequency ride-through tests as per NERC PRC-024
are included.

Revision history
Version 2 (v1.4.19) | 27 November 2024
- Removed extra blank subplot (was present in only some Plot Nodes).
- Fixed template mapping issue which caused LVRT and HVRT signals to not appear on the specified sub-plots.
Version 1 (v1.4.18) | 15 November 2024
- First template release
